'B Players': The Real Game-Changer

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

It makes perfect sense that in the corporate world, we're often dazzled by the 'A Players' - the superstars, the high-flyers, the ones always basking in the limelight. They're the ones who grab the headlines with their groundbreaking ideas and stellar achievements. They're often seen as the driving force of the company.

But what if I told you that our obsession with 'A Players' is blinding us to the real game-changers of our organizations - the 'B Players'?

The Steady

'B Players' are the unsung heroes, the steady eddies. They're the ones who keep the gears of your organization turning, day in and day out. They're your project managers who deliver on time, your salespeople who consistently meet their targets, your customer service reps who keep your clients happy.

While 'A Players' are busy making waves, 'B Players' are the calm beneath the surface, providing the stability and consistency that every organization needs. They're the ones who stick around when the going gets tough, who lend their steady hand when the 'A Players' move on to their next big thing.

Great things in business are never done by one person; they're done by a team of people." - Steve Jobs

The Catch

But here's the catch: 'B Players' are often overlooked for promotions, left out of the high-profile projects, and rarely get the recognition they deserve. This neglect is leading them straight to the EXIT.

The Idea

So, here's a radical idea: What if we shift our focus from the 'A Players' to the 'B Players'? What if we start recognizing the immense value that these steady, reliable, and consistent performers bring to our organizations?

Here's how we can start:

  1. Acknowledge their contributions. A simple 'thank you' or 'well done' can go a long way.

  2. Provide them with opportunities for growth. They may not seek the spotlight, but they still have ambitions and goals.

  3. Involve them in important decisions. They have a unique perspective and valuable insights that can benefit your organization.

The Challenge

So, here's a challenge to all the leaders out there: It's time to shift the spotlight to your 'B Players'. Recognize their efforts, value their contributions, and give them the respect they deserve.

Remember, we don't need to wait until it’s too late. But do you agree? Comment and let me know.
